ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Elena Avila (1944-2011) was a registered nurse with a master’s degree in psychiatric nursing. She spent twenty-five years as a professional curandera practicing traditional Mexican/Chicano folk medicine and as an international speaker and workshop presenter on curanderismo.
Joy Parker is an ethnographic writer who has taught at Columbia University and New York University. She is the co-author of several books including Woman Who Glows in the Dark: A Curandera Reveals Traditional Aztec Secrets of Physical and Spiritual Health, Maya Cosmos: Three Thousand Years on the Shaman’s Path, The Sound of the Earth: A Man’s Mid-Life Passage and Spiritual Awakening and A Forest of Kings: The Untold Story of the Ancient Maya and Maya Cosmos.
